Elvis Motorcycle

My friend just acquired a motorcycle that the previous owner swears Elvis rode in one of his movies.
However he's not sure which one. He thinks it may be a Hawaiian film.
I know there were 3 motorcycle films that Elvis did but I don't think it's any of those.
In other words the motorcycle wasn't a key feature of the film. I think it possibly appears in only one or two scenes. Not sure though.
It's a California registered bike, and in CA vehicles keep the same plates for the lifetime of the bike.
The previous owner claims that the license plate is clearly visible in the movie as Elvis rides away on it.

It's a 1962-63 Red Honda Dream
License plate #: 154613

Can anyone tell me what movie this bike appears in?

Here's a link to what the bike looks like: http://lh4.ggpht.com/themotorcycleshopsa/RqfJa2wNlAI/AAAAAAAAAKE/au5PAX5xepY/s400/100_0017.JPG

Your help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Jeff

DESTINY 1969 Elvis Presley & Charles Manson (by Jeff Schrembs all rights reserved)

DESTINY 1969 Elvis Presley and Charles Manson (by Jeff Schrembs 2009 all rights reserved):

1969 was a "history making" year in America and remains as a definitive year ending the 1960’s in many ways other than…numerically. In spite of this decade being known as the “feel good 1960’s” there was also hate, riots, and even…murder. Murder that was so horrific, so gory, that seasoned Police Officers simultaneously threw up upon first view.

In 1969 California was known as the “Land of Milk and Honey’, the “Golden Coast”, “the place of the never ending sun and surf”, and the Land of Hollywood. In August of 1969 it would be known as the “Land of Murder”. Specifically California in 1969 would show that no one was safe, that innocent people could be randomly butchered in their own homes, and that steel gates and locks were no match for the intentions of a man committed to bringing death to those inside. The “mastermind” behind the murders had a name…Charles Manson.

The summer of 1969 in California was a Mecca bringing together many musical, cultural, and spiritual activities. Drug use was commonplace. Sexual liberation was exploding. Amercia was engaged in the Vietnam War and the site of young Americans dying and returning in “body bags” was a daily occurrence. Civil Rights for minorities were long overdue and Politicians were reacting to decades of injustice. Peace, love, and War were part of the Hippie culture vernacular and “mocking authority” was…in full swing. America was changing and those changes were being propelled by musicians who sang about life, sang about change, sang about love, and sang about death. No where in America was “hotter”, in the current musical scene, than in California in 1969.

Hollywood (California) held endless promises of possibilities, wealth, power, success, and connections. However, many people had come to California (by bus, train, plane, and by hitchhiking) only to discover that life could (in fact) be “hard” in Hollywood. In stead of immediate “entertainment work” many of those who arrived recently soon learned some very hard lessons in life. Many sought “relief” with the aid of the "drugs of their choice". Some just resigned themselves to simply being in "real world no glamour jobs" as doormen, waiters, etc. Some left California, after their money went out or their dreams went unrealized, to return back “home” carrying with them the lessons that not all are welcomed with immediate job offers and/or stardom. Yet many still “chased the dream” always hoping for the "one break" that would free them from their societal chains allowing the World to behold their talents and to have their name “put into lights”.

The ‘unspoken truth” was that there were “two sides” to life in California (and/or “two sides” of the same coin). One side was flush with success, money, power, fashion, travel, health, and the best that life offered. The other side lived “hand to mouth” in full view of those who made “made it”.

In California in 1969 one influential Rocker returned to the stage after years of being sidelined by contractual obligations to star in movies. Just a year earlier, without warning, the “leather clad” Greek God had reclaimed his by appearing in a “TV Special”. This musically gifted, icon, was named…Elvis Aron Presley.

To even put the names “Charles Manson” and “Elvis Presley” into the same “story” is both shocking and…intriguing. In human history one would be hard pressed to find two people who were more…polar opposites. In spite of their “notoriety” never before has the true story been told, in its entirety, about what really occurred in 1969 as it related to “Charles Manson” and “Elvis Presley”. Two sides of the same coin? No. However, fate has a way of bringing together individuals who (on their own) would never have interacted. Thus was the case here as these men would meet and lives would forever be changed including their own.

In summary, in California 1969 Charles Manson was found on the property of Elvis Presley. How he got there, why he got there, and his intent for being there remains…speculative. The fact is that Charles Manson was there, without invitation, and before his name, face, and his actions would repulse a Nation.

When discovered on Elvis’ property Manson was said to have called out the names of people “well known” in “Hollywood’s musical scene”. He also, in between rants of profanity, began to assert that he was a singer/musician himself. At some point he affirmed that he was, and had, “lived there before” (i.e. in the home and on the property). As was customary, when fans or “others” were discovered on the property without notice/permission, the person(s) were (a) removed and (b) informed not to come back. Such was the case when Charles Manson was discovered on the property of Elvis Presley.

**NOTE: Charles Manson, in several non-specific interviews, told his version of events as follows: I lived in Elvis Presley's house, man. He ran me out of the yard. I got mad at him, I was going to throw some rocks at him, cause I thought he was an idiot, an egotistical fucking punk. I never liked him even a little bit, but everybody else always kow-towed to him because he was rich and everything. But to me that don't mean shit. I don’t give a fuck how rich you are, I'll bust you up anyway.

In 1969 Elvis, for the first time in his life, was married to (the then, now, and always beautiful) Priscilla since May 1, 1967. Nine months after the day they were married (i.e. February 1, 1968) Lisa Marie Presley was born. Elvis now had a wife, a daughter, and (at the age of 34) responsibilities for others who he loved…with all his heart. To those who knew Elvis, and worked for him, nothing was more important than the security (whether it was at Graceland in Memphis Tennessee and/or in Bel Aire California) of Elvis and his beloved family.

In the summer of 1969 many things were “heating up” and not just due to the weather. There was a palatable discontent brewing between the “young” and the “establishment”. Emotions ran high across America as Americans, including children, were witnessing confrontations of the Civil Rights Movement and having to address emotions/events/rights that had been “minimized” for far too long.

The "Cold War" still existed, as it had been for about 20 years now, and problems between Communism and America remained. Extremists like the Black Panthers openly carried automatic weapons in the streets and drug use, from marijuana to heroin, was becoming a daily part of the lives of America's Youth. So many things were changing, at such rapid pace, that if one stopped to ponder one could (literally) feel something…different…something not quite familiar…something…dangerous.

It was in this "societal cocktail" that a Charles Manson, who many confirmed was a mesmerizing man with boundless musical abilities, played on the hopes and fears of susceptible young adults. At the time no one believed that “pure evil” would spawn from the passionate songs written, performed, and originated from one Charles Manson.

Charles Manson was a once promising musician who realized the power wielded by having a powerful “combination” of beautiful women and (seemingly) an endless supply of drugs. Manson used his verbal charms (accompanied by his playing the guitar and singing about society's ills) to lure other “young souls” into his World not defined by borders…but by his words.

In between hits of acid Manson offered the promise of happiness and community and endless sex and drugs. Most of all Charles Manson offered “acceptance, peace, stability, and unconditional love”. People from Texas came. Rich girls came. Cheerleaders came. People from all walks of life came. Under Manson’s guidance, and constant manipulation, all “boundaries” were…removed. Manson aggressively passed around LSD always taking a “lesser amount” so that he remained in full control.

Just as their minds were “primed”, altered by the chemical reactions of the drugs coursing through their veins, Manson would invade their minds, their thoughts, and their sub conscious with his beliefs and his endless stream of words designed to bring them closer to him in every sense.

Time and again Manson would use the words of the Bible, passages selected to substantiate his “beliefs”, and tell this followers (i.e. the “family”) about the forthcoming “end of the World”. Manson believed, and passed along to his “family”, that he and he alone was chosen one to lead his “children” after Armageddon. Manson would start society anew and his “guidance” would allow the “family” to share in his…greatness. Manson knew how to influence others and he used the words contained within the Bible to further his perverted beliefs, words, and actions.

As a child Elvis had been told about evil. Evil deeds that some men do, and then make amends for. Evil that was in the World centuries ago and evil that was in the World today. Evil was not sole custody of the Devil (i.e. Satan) for it had been shown to man since Adam’s “biting of the apple”.

Elvis learned these lessons as they were taught from his Bible that his loving Mother (Gladys) had given to him. Elvis kept this Bible with him as a young man, then as a new singing “act”, then as a World Famous Entertainer, as a young Army Man in Germany, during his movie career, and now in 1969 he had his Bible where he could use it the most…on his nightstand. Most every night that Bible would be opened and Elvis would go through the words, underline passages, question, and repeat the words as he lay in bed repeat the words in a soft voice just so they were barely audible but Elvis did so because it helped him to process, understand, to learn…and to remember.

Charles Manson bounced around Hollywood, and Los Angeles, with his guitar and supply of drugs and beautiful women who would do anything Manson told them (including having sex in public immediately after Manson told them to do so), Manson “landed” at a remote abandoned film set now known as Spahn Ranch. This is where Manson, and his “family”, began to turn the ranch into a compound under the complete control of Charles Manson.

At one point several of the female “family” members were picked up hitchhiking (which was a commonly used by the “youth” in order to “catch a ride” to a specific destination) by Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. The girls made use of Wilson’s generosity of letting the girls use the house, car, food, etc. as he was going out of town. One night when he returned he was met in the driveway by a stranger. Wilson asked “are you going to hurt me?” and the stranger bent down and kissed Dennis Wilson’s feet then introduced himself as Charles Manson and that he had been providing Dennis Wilson with his (i.e. Manson’s) girls and drugs. Wilson welcoming Manson into his house and many times let Manson and the “family” stay there weeks on end, and the party…began.

It wasn't long before Manson was present at parties, through the invitation of Dennis Wilson, of those in the “up and coming” music scene. A relationship developed between Dennis and Manson which also included Manson playing his guitar and original singing songs he had written. Dennis stated that he was “blow away” by Mansons’ talents at which point Manson provided Dennis with beautiful women, who would do anything requested, and (of course) drugs…lots and lots of drugs.

Dennis actually set up, and paid all of the associated “studio costs”, Manson to have come “recording time”. Dennis also introduced Manson to his acquaintances in the entertainment business. Dennis routinely introduced Manson as “a very talented singer and writer that he was working with”. Consistently Dennis began to brag about getting Manson into the music business as he told Manson that he would soon be a…"star" and that he had the connections to ensure Mansons’ success.

The beginning of the 1960’s was “unique” for Elvis. He had just returned Germany and received an honorable discharge from the Army. His beloved Mother had passed away in August of 1958. The woman he thought he would marry when he was drafted was now replaced in his heart by a young American whose Father was in the Military also stationed in Germany. He was unsure about “what was next” whether it was recording, live performances, or movies. Under the guidance of Colonel Parker Elvis agreed to do a “few pictures” which soon turned into “money making machines” rendering Elvis (contractually) incapable of doing anything else. Soon one picture a year became two then three and the budgets decreasing along with the script quality. The Beatles had overtaken America leaving Elvis (at times) to sing about “doing the Clam” and other “songs” that Elvis detested (but was professional enough to make the best of it). The torment of years of “settling” in his own career goals and standards had now been replaced with critical acclaim and requests for live appearances. Seven years of “doubt” (self and sometimes public) had been displaced when Elvis “returned” in his 1968 Singer (i.e. known as the “68 Special” and/or the “Comeback Special”) Special. There was no doubt that in 1969 there was no “brighter star” in California, or the World, than Elvis.

Having been in prison previously, for forging a US Treasury check, Manson learned valuable lessons in Prison and Manson believed that what one man told another was "binding" and he lived his life that way. Manson expected others to adhere to what they said as well and it did not matter if the words were said while on an LSD trip or while smoking pot. Manson expected you to do exactly what you said whether you knew it or not was not the point. If you said it to Manson then he held you to your words.

Decades before Elvis, and his Mother, had known the pains of having Vernon Presley serve time for altering a check. However, the lessons that Vernon learned which passed along to Elvis was that Vernon took full responsibility for his actions, did his time, and made restitution. Vernon gave his word to Gladys to, regardless of the circumstances, to never again put their family in Jeopardy. Vernon kept his word to Gladys and Elvis never forgot the importance of doing so.

Dennis Wilson, of the Beach Boys, became enamored with Manson and promised him a meeting with the Manager (who was the son of legendary Actress Doris Day) of the musical group "The Byrd’s" who were an “up and coming hot rock group”. Manson (excitingly) responded with one word…“cool” when hearing about this meeting. Manson realized the ever increasing need to provide money for “the family”. Manson believed that a “musical contract” would provide just such an income along with giving Manson the “forum” to where he could spread his messages…to others.

Charles Manson had distinct tastes in music throughout his childhood. But now, in 1969, Manson had believed that the Beatles had “tuned in” to Manson’s “vibes” and his thoughts and his “words”. Manson believed that the Beatles, in the form of songs on their albums, were responded directly to Manson. Manson shared this belief with every member of the “family”. Words that were penned, and then sang, by Lennon and McCartney found “revised meanings” to Manson (i.e. Armageddon, End of the World, wars between the races, etc.).

What we know of Manson’s musical “tastes” is that he loathed Country music. Surprisingly Manson has openly admitted that he loved Bing Crosby. He liked many rock and roll acts but has said that he did not like Elvis Presley (what impact the fact that Manson was “removed” from Elvis’ property played is unclear but it surely did not “favorably add” to Manson’s like/dislike of Elvis).

Note: In an interview in later years Charles Manson said that “Bing Crosby was a diamond and Elvis Presley was a rhinestone”.

During one of the nights Manson stayed at Dennis’ home Dennis made good on the promise to meet with the “Byrd’s” Manager and his name was Terry Melcher (who was the son of legendary Actress Doris Day). Manson played for Terry, and sang a few original songs, and after a while Terry said that he had to go back to his home and needed a ride. Manson offered to drive him home and Terry agreed. During the ride Manson kept talking about his music and upon arrival to Terry’s home (they had pulled directly in front of the home) Manson stopped the car and said “do we have a deal?” (Meaning was Terry going to sign Manson to a contract). Terry responded by saying “I am going to think it over the next few days”. Terry then opened his door and started to exit the car and then said “have a good night Charlie”. Manson was too deep in thought, as the previous words Terry said were being processed in Mansons’ brain as a “rejection” and Manson did not like rejection, to respond back to Terry at which point Terry said “goodbye” and then walked a few steps to the front door and then entered his home.

Under the darkness of night the dashboard lights illuminated the anguished profile of Manson trying to come to grips with the words “I am going to think it over”. Manson did not understand what there was to “think over” and soon became visibly despondent by not being offered a contract “right then”. Manson reflected upon his relationship with Dennis Wilson, who was close friends with Terry Melcher, and then decided to hold out hopes that Terry would get back with Manson in a few days. Before putting the car into gear, to move from park, Manson looked at the property and repeated the address to himself. He repeated it again out-loud just enough so it was audible. He did this so that he could…remember it.

In response to the demands for live appearances Elvis had signed an agreement to appear in Las Vegas (note: this would be Elvis’ first live appearances in over seven years). Rehearsals for the Vegas shows were going well for Elvis and he was in excellent (physical) shape. He was rested and he was tan and he was in love with his wife and enamored with his baby daughter. The musicians, and orchestra, that were put together for the Vegas shows were among the “best in the business”. Elvis had already put together his “back bone” (which consisted of drums, bass, lead guitar, piano, etc.) group along with the men’s vocal group (i.e. JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet) and the women’s vocal group (i.e. the Sweet Inspirations) for vocal backups. Elvis also had his friend, going back to his enlistment in the Army, who was also an accomplished musician/singer/gospel artist and his name was Charlie Hodge. The rehearsals were winding down and Elvis felt invigorated. He looked great, he felt great, and his vocal abilities were among the very best of his entire career. Elvis was back on top and he had earned it as he had everything in his life. There were many justified reasons to just…smile.

When Charlie returned back to “the Ranch” (i.e. Spahn Ranch) and told everyone the news about the meeting with the “record manager”. Charlie was in the mood to party but Charlie worried to himself about the financial crisis as he needed money to support “The Family”. Manson had a lot to think about but he decided to start a party, pass out the drugs, grab the girl of his choice, sing a few songs, and try to let everyone believe that things would work out (as Manson had said would happen) for the “family” with Manson in charge. Manson looked around at his “diverse family”, took a hit of LSD, and looked into the eyes of each family “member” and gave them each…a smile.

Over the next few days Manson called Terry over and over but never spoke with him. Manson did the same to Dennis Wilson with the very same results (i.e. no answer). Each call made Manson more and more upset and a few days later (finally) he reached Dennis Wilson on the phone.

Manson began the conversation by saying “Dennis, you are a hard man to get a hold of”. Manson listened to Dennis’ response but cut him off so that he could ask Dennis the question that had been “eating him up inside now for days”. Manson cleared his throat and asked Dennis “have you heard anything about Terry?” In spite of Dennis Wilson’s assurances of making Manson a “star” Dennis Wilson told Manson the truth and that was that Terry had said “at this time Terry was not interested”. Manson screamed at Dennis over the phone and slammed the phone against a wall while saying “do you know who you are speaking to”?

Note: Manson has stated in several interviews that his involvement with Dennis Wilson included but was not limited to: Dennis Wilson did record a song written by Charles Manson called “Never Learn To Love”. In several interviews during 1980-2009 Charles Manson said that the Beach Boys stole many songs from Charles Manson and in return they “gave” Charles Manson a Rolls Royce and the home that Dennis Wilson was living at. Charles Manson asked for the ownership papers for both and was told that “the Manager holds that and we will get in touch with him to get them for you. Since Charles Manson held everyone literally to the words coming out of their mouth Charles Manson believed that the house, the Rolls Royce, and the legal paperwork was coming and that he owned these possessions valued at several hundred thousand dollars in the late 1960’s. IF this was true it should have provided Manson with the means to readily provide for him and for the “family” that he had been “stressing” about for months).

The serenity of Spahn Ranch (note: Spahn Ranch was an abandoned lot where movies had been made many years ago. The ranch had everything Manson needed; space, buildings, access to water, order, nature, no one to bother him, and about 25 miles from Town), where Manson was living with members of the “family” was shattered by the sounds of Manson screaming and beating the phone against a wall. As Manson leaned against the wall, angered and (he believed) betrayed, Manson decided that there needed to be “lessons taught" to Terry and Dennis and Manson was going to personally teach them…tonight.

Manson called for some of his followers to go with him. Manson went and got his gun and his ammo. Manson went directly to Dennis Wilson’s home with the gun and banged on the front door yelling for “Wilson”. Dennis Wilson was not at home and Manson was told that and asked “if there was a message”? At that point Manson handed the man one (1) bullet and said “give this to Dennis” and stormed out.

Manson then drove to Terry’s house, parked the car, and started to walk down the driveway seeing people to the left by the swimming pool. As he was approaching the swimming pool entry he was stopped and asked who he was? Manson demanded to see Terry. The man that was there, who was photographing a beautiful blonde Hollywood Star (who was in the swimming pool) told Manson “I don’t know any Terry and now the Polanski’s live here”. Manson was perplexed as he had driven Terry to this very house not long ago. The photographer restated his comments again and again as Manson attempted to process the words. Manson then recalled Terry mentioning the property had a “guest house” so Manson went to search it and find Terry. After Manson had searched, without finding neither “hide nor hair” of Terry Manson was escorted Manson off the property and to his car.

Manson got into the car and starred at the beautiful house, landscape, driveway, all the while the photographer was taking photos of the Hollywood Star. Her name was Sharon Tate. This was the second time that Manson was kicked off a property and he made a commitment that never again would this happen.

Manson was in a rage and made a decision that Armageddon needed to start now and he knew that if he could get the “rich establishment” killed, and then frame African Americans by giving the murdered victims personal items (i.e. cash, wallets, jewelry, etc.) to any African American stranger he found on the streets at night. Manson believed that the murders had to be so “dramatic and brutal” that the White “establishment” would “go to War” against the African American community and the Black Panthers never knowing that they were being used in a deadly game written, produced, and directed by Charles Manson (who would then rise up and take charge over the survivors).

Upon his arrival at the compound Manson gave the orders to have ALL of the occupants of the home that “Terry” lived at slaughtered. Manson used the terminology of “Helter Skelter”, which was a song on the current Beatles Album, as Manson wanted the murders to be gruesome and for there to be left “signs” written on the walls using the murdered victims own blood. Words like “PIG” and “Helter Skelter” were found on the walls and some words were actually “carved” into the murdered victim’s bodies. Lastly, Manson gave specific instructions to members of his “family” to make sure that the victims were stabbed, shot, hit, etc. “time and time again until they ran out of bullets and their knife blades had broken in pieces”.

After the initial murders Charles Manson made up a list of people to be killed and mutilated hoping that they would appear to be “random” (i.e. with no ties to Manson and his family). However, many of the victims would be “persons who Charles Manson knew” and some would be “persons that members of “the Family” had met” and others would be “rich” (i.e. celebrities, singers, entertainers, Hollywood, etc. that Charles Manson and “the Family” members called these people…”PIGGIES”) and others would be purely random as if the “family” found them at night alone they would be killed (i.e. wrong place at the wrong time). As the list (to be killed and mutilated) was made there was one person whose name Charles Manson made sure was on the list for several reasons and the primary reason was “personal”. That persons name was Elvis Presley.

When Manson heard from the “family” the details about how the murders were executed he was not happy. Manson said that they had been ‘sloppy”. Manson said that he would personally “handle” the second night of murders so that he could “show them” how to do it…”right” (Note: Manson drove the vehicle on the second night of “planned murder” and Manson parked the car and got out and climbed over the steel gate . Manson entered the property, then tied up a Man and his wife, and then opened up the gate (from the inside) so that the other “family” members could (a) review Mansons’ handiwork and (b) finish the job. After Manson briefly discussed “how it is to be done” he then asked each “family” member if they were “ready”. At this point Manson left and drove the car away leaving the “family” members with no way to leave so after they were done they ate from the fridge, took showers in the home, and then hitchhiked back to the ranch.

When the newspapers released the first reports of the murders Hollywood (and America) was shocked, horrified, upset, scared, and perplexed as to “why”? When the pictures, and the details of what occurred, became known the “why” turned to “anger” and “resolve” to catch these barbarians who murdered innocent men and women.

When Elvis learned of the deaths, as part of the story was relayed to him, he became even more angered/outraged when he learned that one of the victims was Jay Sebring. In Hollywood Elvis had befriended a musician/singer by the name of Johnny Rivers. They were even Motorcycle riding buddies on occasion. Johnny Rivers hair stylist, who he had recommended to Elvis, was named Jay Sebring.

After the second murders were done, with newspapers and a newscast proclaiming that there were no “strong leads” as to who was responsible for these murders and that evidence was “sparse”, Manson began to believe that he would not be caught. Manson called the “family” members together and stated that his plan had worked because it was…destiny. Manson told them that since Armageddon had not yet occurred (i.e. a race War had not taken into the streets and people openly killing each other) they would have to make a “list” of celebrities to be killed and butchered like the rest. Manson had the motivation, the desire, the weapons, the list, access to their homes, and a “family” who had proven itself “ready willing and able’ to kill for him anytime…on demand. Manson would bring Armageddon to the streets of California and then America and he believed he would not be stopped.

Manson became “excited” to see the news broadcasts about the murders and he asked that every local, and national, newspaper be bought several times a day. Manson called upon his “entertainment connections” to ask if they knew anything. With each “heartfelt scared response” that people shared with Manson he became more embolden and he laughed at their fright. Manson took pleasure in the slaughter of these PIGGIES.

On morning Charles Manson was going over the details of those on the “list” and he became more excited as he read the names on the list. The day’s newspaper had arrived and Manson immediately called everyone around the table as Manson started to real aloud the status on the murder investigation.

While going through the various sections Charles Manson became more and more “bolden” about his success. But, after reaching the “entertainment section” Manson’s demeanor and facial expression changed into “emboldens anger”. Manson screamed wildly and slammed the newspaper down on the table. Then he picked it up shaking it in the air while screaming “look at this…look at this”! Finally, Manson set the paper down on the table and unfolded the entertainment section pointing to a specific article. The article was entitled “Elvis Presley arrives in Las Vegas - all shows are SOLD OUT”.

Within a few months Charles Manson, and members of “the Family”, would be arrested and their faces splashed across TV sets, and newspapers, nationwide. The horror of what they did, and what they believed, caused great unrest in America in 1969 and consumed residents of California in 1969 and each year thereafter.

A few months after the Charles Manson Murders Elvis Presley was threatened with being murdered. A letter had been delivered to Colonel Parker saying that Elvis would be killed. Another threat was made at the Hotel Elvis was performing at. The Colonel notified the FBI and every precaution was taken. As Elvis confided to his friend from his hometown Memphis, named Sonny West, that he (Elvis) had a fear of someone shooting and killing him for no reason. Elvis actually broke down and cried in the dressing room. He then called in Red, and Jerry Schilling, (note: they were part of the Memphis Mafia and were part of Elvis Bodyguards) into the room and said, "I haven't done anything to anybody to get shot. I haven't hurt anybody. If some SOB tries to kill me, I want you guys to get him; and I want him done up right. I don't want him sitting around like Charles Manson, with a grin on his face or a claim to fame that he killed Elvis Presley”.

Whether this threat was linked directly, or not, by Charles Manson and/or any member of his “Family” we do not know. There was the possibility that one of the “Family” members, who had decided to run away from Charles Manson for these murders, knew firsthand who was on the list. This person may have taken steps to notify those on the list (directly and/or indirectly). As of the date of this story (i.e. September 12, 2009) the case details remain “unsolved”.

Worth noting is that since the murders occurred Elvis had taken steps to procure guns both in Memphis and in California. Since Tennessee had a Law prohibiting citizens from openly carrying guns Elvis had been appointed a “Special Deputy” and was given a Badge. This event (i.e. the Charles Manson Murders) propelled Elvis’ desire for guns and police badges and would one day bring him to Washington DC (unannounced) to obtain a Federal Narcotics Badge from President Richard Nixon with the photographs becoming…infamous.

The individuals, who were murdered, at the direction/instruction of Charles Manson, were: On August 9, 1969 these innocent people were slaughtered at the direction of Charles Manson. They were 18 year old Steven Parent, Wojciech Frykowski, Jay Sebring, Abigail_Folger, and Sharon Tate. The following night (i.e. August 10, 1969) Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary LaBianca were murdered.

Life, for many, went on only after many tears were shed over the lives that were taken. Time, subject to the familiar narrative, does not “heal all wounds”.

Nonetheless I, personally, pray that God allows the relatives, friends, loved ones, etc. of the victims to have some type of “peace” and to give them the “strength” to remember the good times and to put their faith (always) in God’s hands.

We may ask “why” it is that a “man” like Charles Manson is allowed to “live” while a remarkable decent honest caring man, like Elvis Presley, is taken from us at the age of 42. However, we must resign ourselves that many questions we have will remain…unanswered. Such is one of lifes’ lessons. Answers and questions, life and death …two sides of the same coin.

Probably the most “famous” individual that was murdered by Charles Manson’s Family was (actress) Sharon Tate who was living at the home that “Terry” had previously (note: he had moved out a few weeks prior). Sharon Tate was married to respected filmmaker Roman Polanski. Sharon Tate was 8 months pregnant when she was murdered. The child died (sadly) as well. Needless to say, Roman Polanski was devastated that he had now lost his wife and his child. The pain must have been…unbearable.

Many years later, by the grace of God, Roman Polanski found love and married. Polanski’s wife became pregnant and bore a healthy son. Death bequeaths Life and vice versa. Two sides of the same coin. His son was named after his Father (i.e. Roman Polanski) favorite singer. Roman Polanski proudly bestowed the name upon his son. The name was…Elvis.

Elvis 68 Comeback by Jeffrey Schrembs

THE STORY OF THE 68 SPECIAL
Authored by Jeff Schrembs 2009 – All Rights Deserved:

Elvis, in 1968, was enduring numerous “life changing” events in his life. First he was married May 1, 1967 to (the then, now, and forever beautiful) Priscilla (who had came to America/Graceland to live in December of 1962) . Secondly, his only daughter (Lisa Marie) was born exactly (9) nine months after the wedding on February 1, 1968. Thirdly, the "era of the Beatles", along with several other major acts, were coming to an abrupt end (by monopolizing the charts has they had beginning in 1963).

The "68 Special" is also referred to as the "Comeback Special" or "Elvis Comeback" or "68 Comeback". Interestingly, the actual name of this (what was to be the "highest rated show of all 1968" ") event was actually entitled "Elvis".

"Elvis", the Singer Special, began taping in June of 1968 and was aired on December 3, 1968 on NBC-TV (note: in 1968 there were three major television stations ABC, NBC, CBS and they captured 99.9% of the American viewing audience).

Elvis had "overcome the World" musically/recording artist/live performances (concerts and TV) beginning in the 1950's and he created a sound that was "pure, full, fun, and his own". Elvis, pure and simple, was THE Rock and Roll King. Yet, the King had not been onstage before a “live crowd” in over 7 years. His music, limited to the quality of the movies he was working on, were not “up to par” but since Elvis had “signed” to do the movies he was very limited in having “songs of quality” consistently into his movies. Many times, over many years Elvis voiced his concern about the songs he had to sing on the movies and that he was not being challenged as an actor or as a singer (note: Elvis’ early works being Love Me Tender to GI Blue were good. Then you have a great storyline of “Viva Las Vegas” with Ann Margaret and their chemistry was obvious to everyone and fans everywhere enjoyed this movie. After “Viva Las Vegas” there would be “one or two” songs, in all of the movies that he did after “Viva Las Vegas” that Elvis found “acceptable”. Every other song either made him laugh, or angry, but Elvis was the ultimate professional and finished each movie having given his very best efforts).

The previous decade had not been “personally satisfying to Elvis” and he suffered greatly when he learned late in 1958 that he was drafted. While in the Army Elvis received permission to visit his Mother in Memphis who was sick and in the Hospital. Elvis took the next flight out, which he stayed awake the entire trip praying and thinking about his beloved mother, and arrived at the Hospital and directly went into her room (Gladys) who was weak, complaining about her health, and yet “lit up” holding her only Childs hand. They loved each other so much and it was one of the worst tragedies for Elvis as just a few days later, his mother passed away in August of 1958. In 1960 Elvis was honorably discharged from the Army and agreed to do a “live on stage” TV appearance with Frank Sinatra sponsored by Timex (i.e. watch maker whose claim to fame was “takes a licking and keeps on ticking”) Other than the "Elvis Returns Frank Sinatra Special", that aired shortly after Elvis' discharge, Elvis did not perform onstage “live” because Elvis agreed to enter into "movie contracts" for 1961 – 1963 (negotiated by Colonel Parker).

These "movie contracts" would keep Elvis away from a "live audience" until this "Comeback Special" of 1968. I don’t believe that Elvis knew that these “movie contractual obligations would keep him away from a live audience for 7 years but the movies were successful, Elvis made a lot of money, Elvis was able to have some of his friends (Memphis Mafia) get bit parts/roles in his movies, and Elvis got into a “pattern” that revolved around the “movie shots” for the day and then Elvis and the boys playing in between shots and jamming/singing after the days work was over. The money Elvis made off of these monies was SIGNIFICANT and allowed him to travel, purchase nice cars, pay his employees, and it gave him a sense of “routine” which is nice to have when you are raising a young child (as Elvis and Priscilla were doing).

Colonel Parker initially began negotiations with NBC in 1967 (October) and it was considered that Elvis would do a "Christmas movie" along with a Christmas Special for the 1968 Christmas Season. On January 12, 1968 Colonel Parker and Tom Sarnoff (NBC Vice President) announced that Elvis' first television appearance in more than eight years would be a Christmas special for which NBC. Elvis would receive $250,000 for the "live special" and he would receive an additional $850,000 to produce an Elvis movie and an additional $25,000 for the film's music. Out of this agreement came the (critically acclaimed/reviewed) movie entitled "Change of Habit" which co-started Mary Tyler Moore.

It was also agreed that the "executive producer" would be Bob Finkel who had (recent) variety success and was nominated for an Emmy in 1965, 1966 and 1967, He, deservingly so, won the Emmy for 1966 and 1967. It was Bob Finkel who was instrumental in enabling Colonel Parker to see the "light" in allowing Elvis to perform live and not do an "ordinary safe Christmas Special". However, Colonel Parker had the contract stipulate that the “closing number” would, in fact, be a Christmas Song!

Instead of a "tame" Christmas Special, as other "artists" were doing in the 1960's (i.e. Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, and others) Elvis agreed, with great assistance from Steve Binder who opened Elvis’ eyes to doing a real live concern that would showcase Elvis’ musical abilities and his awesome stage antics. Elvis was asked to "put it all on the line" and get back to basics which meant (a) not being safe (b) going against Colonel Parker and (c) possibly doing damage to his career. It was NOT an easy choice, at the time, but kudos to Steve Binder for having the forethought to “re-introduce Elvis” to his Fans and to new fans of good music.

Colonel Parker was against this idea and was relentless in his desire to have Elvis "sing a few Christmas songs" and they say "Merry Christmas". There was much “give and take” between Colonel Parker, NBC, and the Director and Producer. At some point Elvis, who never “spoke out against Colonel Parker in public”, was asked in a room where Colonel Parker was , Elvis was, and Steve Binder was “Elvis, you want to do a Christmas Special don’t ya”? Elvis replied that he wanted to do what he and Steve Binder had discussed which would NOT be a Christmas Special. To Elvis' credit he accepted the feedback from the Producer and realized that his love of "live performing" had been building over the past seven years. When it counted most Elvis stood up to Colonel Parker and said what he wanted. To Colonel Parker’s credit he accepted the decision and made it work.

Elvis appeared on a "square stage" along with reuniting his early band members Scotty Moore (Guitar) and DJ Fontana (drums). The stage would have fans surrounding each of the four sides. Many of the “front rows” would be filled by women. Elvis also had Charlie Hodge accompany him who was a singer, performer, Guitar player, and Gospel artist who Elvis had befriended in the Army and who had been working with Elvis since his Army discharge. The format would be "Elvis, more Elvis" a recipe in 1968 that was "unsure" and "unproven" and (in all reality) a "make or break career move" for Elvis.

Elvis lost weight, vocally challenged himself, and prepared for this "live intimate live Concert" mentally, physically, and vocally. To add to Elvis' incredible physical condition (he was down to 148 pounds which was about 35 pounds lighter than he normally was) his designer (i.e. Bill Blew who would design costumes for Elvis up until the day Elvis died) took the "blue jean jacket/jean look" and made a custom made black leather outfit for Elvis to open the show with. Bill Blew created other wonderful outfits for the special and he even got Elvis to agree to wear a “gold lame type jacket” (with black pants) as a type of “appreciation/acknowledgment of the gold lame suit Elvis had worn in the 1950’s. No one other than Elvis’ inner circle knew that Elvis HATED that Gold suit so it was with “trust” for Bill Bile that Elvis agreed to wear everything that Bill Bilew designed for the “special”. Elvis looked WONDERFUL with darkened black hair, sideburns, a slight tan, blinding white teeth, and his vocal/stylist/entertaining abilities were...phenomenal. He was a moving, singing, emotional, smart, sexy, 6 foot star dressed in black leather and he OWNED that stage – his guitar – and his vocal cords and sang/performed with all his heart. The result was that Elvis “connected” with his audience and they screamed, and demanded more, having been away from his live concerts for so long.

For the first time in years Elvis was EXCITED to perform and reviewed a variety of songs not only from his past hits but from more "current" numbers. During the rehearsals it was clear, after each day, that Elvis was "loosening up" and his magnetism was "visible" and it electrified the Producer and everyone who listened/saw it firsthand.

A lot of the credit for Elvis' great mood, and optimism, was that Bob Finkel had hired (in mid May of 1968) Steve Binder (who was only 23 years old) to produce the music. It was agreed that Binders' partner, Bones Howe, who had previously worked with Elvis in the studio and believed that Elvis and Steve Binder would "hit it off", would come as a "package production" deal.

Interestingly, Steve Binder had been a student at the University of California before falling "head over heels" into the music business. Binders' had directed the TV music series entitled "Hullabaloo which was a "must watch" for the youth of the late 1960's (i.e. think about the current MTV TRL series but with "live acts" and everyone dancing and you get the picture).
Binder had become "Los Angles" hottest producer after he produced the Petula Clark special.

During the last (2) two weeks of May 1968 Elvis took Priscilla, baby Lisa Marie, and many of his friends on vacation to Hawaii. Elvis wanted/needed to be relaxed, tanned, rested, and to share some quality "family time" before the actual taping of the "special".

The musical writers assigned to the "special" were Chris Beard (England born yet grew up in Australia) and Allan Blye. They wrote a script in which the trials of a young man was leaving home and searching for happiness along with a career. They wanted to show the obstacles the young man endured along with his eventual (successful) return home. They chose the song "Guitar Man" as the "theme" that linked the scenes together. The "special" was to end with Elvis singing a Christmas song (Colonel Parker had "agreed" that it would end that way) to end the "special".

On June 3, 1968, Elvis began working with Binder and Howe at their offices. During one of the "get to know conversations" Elvis had shared how "saddened" he was by the shooting of Robert Kennedy (which had taken place on June 6, 1968). Elvis had also commented on the struggles of African Americans and the movements/assignation of Dr. Martin Luther King. Steve Binder had taken notes that afterward went to songwriter Earl Brown, who was writing song arrangements for the "special", and asked him for a "modern inspirational closing song". This song would become, and much loved, the incredible (and emotionally moving) song entitled "If I Can Dream" (see video above).

Elvis was handed the words to “If I Can Dream” the night before the final taping. Earl Brown had recorded/sang his somber version of the song and had given Elvis the tape to listen to. The first three times Elvis listened to the song he had to stop it, and get some tissues, for he was crying. Elvis understood that this song captured the essence of Robert Kennedy, Dr, Martin Luther King Jr., Americans, and the hopes of parents/children around the World. Elvis practiced the song for a few hours and then went to bed. When you watch Elvis sing “If I Can Dream” you instantly understand that Elvis is singing it incredibly. Once you understand that Elvis sang this, on one take, after playing around with it a few hours earlier it shows part of the genius that was…Elvis Aron Presley.

The Director was Eugene "Gene" McAvoy and he was tasked with designing the sets that would showcase Elvis, and frame his shots visually, and adhere to the story line. The opening scene of Elvis with the 89 "guitar men" (who were in silhouette and looked like shadows) captured Elvis'...completely. From that shot until Elvis appearing in his white suit standing in front of "red lights" spelling out "ELVIS" was nothing short of...inspirational and genius.

The makeup artist, and one of the choreographers, was Claude Thompson. The other choreographer was Jaime Rogers. Billy Goldenberg was the musical director and worked with Elvis on "Change of Habit".

On June 17th Elvis "officially" began rehearsals and (literally) moved into his NBC dressing room on the NBC lot (which included Elvis sleeping there). Elvis loved to just "jam", with Charlie Hodge and his "Memphis Mafia", and did so while living at the NBC lot. During one of the jam sessions Steve Binder passed by and became "enamored" with Elvis' freewheeling style and comfort level and his vocal ranges. It was then that Steve Binder decided to include the "jam session" as part of the "special" (which included Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, Charlie Hodge, and (2) two other friends of Elvis Alan Fortas and Lance LeGualt).

On June 20th the recording sessions began at Western Recorders. It was imperative that Elvis was showcased with musicians who were "among the best in the World". Not only were the "best of the best" musicians chosen but many were a part of (legendary music producer/genius) Phil Specters' infamous "wrecking crew" that created that "wall of sound" creating "hit after hit" during the 1960's.

Tommy Tedesco, Mike Deasy and Al Casey were picked for guitars (note: Elvis opened up the "special" using Al Casey's beautiful red Hagsrom guitar after Bones Howe had spotted it in Casey's instrument trunk and thought that the bright red guitar with its gold hardware would be perfect. As a "footnote" Hagstrom's were made in Alvadalen, Sweden solely between 1958 and 1983 and were known for great quality).

On bass was Charles Berghofer and Larry Knechtal (who also played the keyboards) on piano was Don Randi, The "sideman" was Hal Blaine who played drums. John Cyr and Elliot Franks provided percussion. Frank DeVito played bongos. Tommy Morgan was on the harmonica.

The "Blossoms" provided the backup vocals (note: the Blossoms were Darlene Love, Fanita James and Jean King) but there were other "unnamed" vocalists as well. The Orchestra Conductor was Billy Goldenberg who conducted an orchestra of strings and horns, all of which added to the final product.

On June 26th. there was an on-set birthday party for Col. Tom Parker. During the birthday celebration the Colonel was given an autographed portrait of Executive Producer Bob Finkel dressed as Napoleon (note: this portrait is still a part of the Colonel's collection in the Graceland Archives). Elvis also sang for the Colonel's pleasure a parody of It Hurts Me written for the occasion by Chris Beard and Allan Blye. The new version of the song went: "It hurts me to see the budget climb up to the sky. It hurts me when Finkel gives me trouble, when I see all my money go just for one g---damned ol' TV show. It hurts me the way that Finkel spends my dough. The whole town is talkin' they're callin' me a fool for listenin' to Binder's same ol' lies. Finkel calls me, says I've got no choice then hangs up the phone in that damned Rolls Royce. It hurts me when my tears start to flow, they promised me sure if I would give in that I would-that I would never go wrong, but tell me the truth is it too much to ask for one lousy tired ol' Christmas song...?"

By June 27th, rehearsals were winding down and the taping of the production numbers had begun. Also that evening there were two sit-down jam session shows taped. On June 29th they shot the two stand-up shows. On Sunday, June 30th, Elvis completed taping the If I Can Dream finale. Physically and emotionally spent, Elvis then left for a week's rest in Palm Springs.

On September 11, 1968 'Variety' announced that the bordello scene had been cut from the TV special, citing it had been passed by the NBC censors but the sponsor Singer had requested that it be removed.

The Elvis special aired on December 3rd. at 9:00 EST and was seen by 42 percent of the viewing audience, making it the number one show for the season and giving NBC its biggest ratings victory of the year. It received, from every corner of America, rave reviews from the critics. Elvis was BACK, ON TOP, and RELEVANT! Rock and Roll, and Elvis Presley, would never be the same.

Elvis, who was nervously watching the show along with Priscilla, received "countless" telephone calls immediately after the show had ended congratulating him for performing a "timeless classic" and "rocking out". Elvis Aron Presley was back and the fans LOVED HIM as they had since his first hit over a decade before (i.e. that’s All Right Little Mama").
While Elvis sat on his couch, with his wife Priscilla, they hugged each other and looked at one another with a “renewed appreciation”. Elvis could, for the first time in years, take pride in his works and (equally important) the Fans loved him…and wanted more.
As they told one another they loved each other Elvis hugged Priscilla knowing that their lives would be changing. And as long as Elvis had Priscilla and baby Lisa Marie he would be happy, fit, and able to take on any entertainment challenges. As a family (Elvis, Priscilla, Lisa Marie) they had pulled off the greatest “Entertainer Comeback” in history and they did it in only 7 months. The mood at Graceland pulsated with happiness, opportunity, love, and possibilities.

Elvis Presley 8/16/09 by Jeff Schrembs (all rights reserved)

Elvis Presley August 16, 2009 by * Jeff Schrembs
(All rights reserved 2009)

August 16, 1977.
To some this date is just another day and year long gone.
To others this date is significant because on this day the Greatest Entertainer who ever lived…died. His name was Elvis Aron Presley.
Besides being a phenomenal singer he also was a Father, a Son, a Friend, an employer, a deeply spiritual/religious man, and someone who cared for others near…and afar.
To Elvis Fans around the World, including those who have left this World, Elvis’ music – life – appearances – and “style” touched millions and his Fans “commitment” to him was/is/forever will be…unyielding. Simply put Elvis shared his love/caring with his Fans, and poured his heart out onstage, and they have never stopped voicing their love for him in every possible way (i.e. buying his music, visiting Graceland, supporting EPE, etc.).
During Elvis’ life he “knew” what it was like to be…poor. He understood what it was like to be “different”. He knew firsthand the strength of family and the human spirit. He learned what it is/was like to lose his Mother (note: Gladys Love Presley passed away on August 14, 1958 at the age of 46 years old but many, including Elvis, believed she was 42 when she died) who was his biggest “Fan” and his life long supporter. He knew what it was like to fall in love and have his heart broken. He learned that even the Worlds Biggest Star (as he was in 1958 when he was drafted) was not immune from the Draft and Elvis served his Country honorably and was discharged in 1960. He learned that loving someone was not “enough” when his marriage to Priscilla, the love of his life, ended in Divorce on October 9, 1973 (after six years of marriage). He knew the trials of being a single parent, sharing custody of his only daughter Lisa Marie Presley with Priscilla (note: Elvis lived in Memphis Tennessee and Priscilla resided in California), and the joys of holding/caring/loving one’s child and teaching them life’s lessons. He also learned about life excesses all the while sharing his wealth with those close to him along with perfect strangers. Elvis knew the feeling of being healthy, fit, and in complete control over one’s body and he also knew the frustrations of growing older – battles with weight – and dealing with (legitimate) medical issues. He knew life’s joys and mans’ shortcomings and the “sting” of betrayal by those closest to him. If Elvis considered you a friend then you were one for life. If you crossed Elvis, or those he loved, unless you made heart-felt/immediate amends you would not get a second chance. He was in many ways a “loner”, and subject to mood swings including depression, yet he never stopped “lighting up any room he entered”. He could MASTER an audience of tens of thousands yet have reservations of “opening up’ to those he loved/knew the majority of his life. He was a “fashion maverick”, and obtained the best materials/items money could buy, but what brought him consistent pleasure (excluding his family which he loved passionately) was taking time to sign autographs along with (many times an ominously) helping individuals/organizations in need. Elvis would leave a stage exhausted yet would recoup and then stay up all hours of the night singing Gospel songs with friends/performing artists. Elvis traveled around the United States in cars/planes that Kings would envy yet one of his prized possessions, which he always carried with him, was the Bible (which he read and many times underlined passages and left handwritten messages/responses in the indexes and unprinted areas of each page). Elvis moved like a panther (i.e. gracefully) onstage, in Concert, and in his movies yet at parties/celebrations it was rare for him to dance unless it was a slow song. Elvis was the greatest recording artist in history yet when listening to songs on the radio many times he would be moved to tears by the lyrics or the performing artist’s rendition. Elvis did not read music yet he had a “photographic memory” (i.e. he could memorize his movies lines as well as those of his fellow actors) and he could instinctively play the chords on the guitar and/or piano. Elvis only had a “high school diploma” but his intelligence was nothing short of “mensa material” (i.e. his photographic memory, his ability to capture songs, his ability to produce/arrange songs her performed, his instincts when it came to dealing with people, his unquenchable desire to read anything/everything that interested him, his interests in religions/spiritual pathways, his well rounded appreciation for fellow artists/performers/writers/etc., his life long endeavors to help others with grace and compassion, etc.). Lastly, Elvis understood that God had blessed him and his honesty and humbleness always stayed with him as he questioned “why me”?
Elvis gave us decades of music, movies, and memories and even after these 32 years since his passing he still is loved by the American (and International) public. The reasons for “being an Elvis Fan” vary yet they remain decades after the World first heard the passion of “That’s All Right Little Mamma” from a vinyl disc formed at Sun Records in Memphis Tennessee.
Having been an Elvis Fan, for the vast majority of my life, I am constantly finding “new” reasons to appreciate Elvis as a performer…and a person. His life lessons, including those in which he made mistakes, should be embraced honestly by everyone. His efforts, failures, and successes should be put in context (fairly) and by doing so we honor his name and ensure that he is afforded the recognition/appreciation that he so truly deserves.
With each passing year it becomes more and more apparent that no one will ever “equal” Elvis’ musical accomplishments…ever. Here are just a few:

• Elvis obtained “gold records” during a time when the population of the United States was LESS than 60 million (compared with 350 million now).

Elvis obtained “gold records” during a time when an artist had to sell ONE MILLION records versus 500,000 now.

Elvis starred in 33 motion pictures and every one of them made money. No other actor before, during, or after Elvis can equal this.

Elvis had the HIGHEST RATED Live Concert, with OVER 1 Billion people watching Live, in 1973 entitled “Aloha from Hawaii” (note: this was also the first “via satellite broadcast” as well).

Elvis had the HIGHEST RATED TV appearance when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan program which captured OVER 80% of the viewing audience in America (note: In comparison American Idol captures less than 5 %).

Elvis sold more records/albums than the next “five” performing artists combined (note: A valid point of contention is that many of Elvis’ record sales have never been released thereby reducing his total validated record sales).

Elvis toured, from 1969 through 1977, on average 188 days per year. EVERY Concert was SOLD OUT and many, in Las Vegas, consisted of “two shows per day” which is UNHEARD OF today. Worth noting is that Elvis performed in the LARGEST Venues in America making his “sold out appearances” even more impressive.

At this time I would like to say THANK YOU to Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, Jack Soden, Joe Esposito, Al Strada, EPE, Joe Esposito, Kathy Westmoreland, James Burton, Members of the Memphis Mafia, Jerry Schilling, Paul Litcher, and Russ Howe. Each of you deserve “sincere thanks” for your contributions to the life/legacy/memory of Elvis as well as your commitment to his Fans. I wish you all nothing but success in each of your personal, and professional, endeavors. I look forward to your future contributions pertaining to Elvis and I also say “thank you” to your families because spending time/energy/efforts away from them, to share your memories/etc. about Elvis, is truly a sacrifice.

To Elvis Fans Worldwide I say THANK YOU for being Elvis Fans and for keeping his name, life, legacy, and works viable and relevant now…and always.

May God always be with Elvis, Gladys, Dodger, Vernon, Jesse Garron, Charlie Hodge, and many others who contributed to Elvis’ music/concerts/films/TV appearances/etc.

Bling Me Back to Graceland

Bling Me Back to Graceland
We were married on Elvis' birthday. Hold on there big fellah, it was just a coincidence. I didn't even realize it until I woke up in a champagne haze, with the TV still blaring on my wedding night. I knew the Fates had conspired when I half-opened one eye and saw there on the news, thousands of fans lined up to worship outside the gates at the temple of Elvis, Graceland.
I have a deep appreciation for all things Elvis, first and foremost his music. The early stuff was genuinely groundbreaking, classic Rock & Roll and some of the later “Vegas” era tunes were also outstanding. The King of Rock & Roll may never have threatened to walk off with an Oscar but hey, who doesn't like it when an Elvis movie pops up on your TV in the middle of the night or on some rainy Saturday afternoon? C'mon, good clean campy 60's fun with the star speeding his brains out on “medicine” while bursting into song every five minutes. Hollywood's starlet du jour fighting the Elvis magnitism, but in the end, falling head over heals for him and then joining in for a duet. Yup, formula scriptwriting and songwriting to die for. No academy awards here but a Spinout, Roustabout, Clambake of a good time.
The clothes, the cars, the airplanes... he was great at the whole star power lifestyle, with a hillbilly twist, and Graceland was a huge part of that. I had wanted to see Graceland for literally decades, and now the end is near, I did it my way.
One doesn't just walk through the famous gates of Graceland, oh no, one must be bussed the five hundred or so feet from the ticket booth across Elvis Presley Boulevard. Not knowing that, we just headed up the driveway like we were family. Getting stopped gave us a chance to check out the graffiti on the wall by the gates before going across to get tickets. People from all over the world have etched in their reminiscences, best wishes or just their moniker for posterity.
Once tickets were procured, we were properly herded aboard the bus and instructed to switch on the recorded tour in the provided headsets. Let me add here that Lance LeGault, (The A-Team's Col. Decker) who narrates the excursion, is perfect. His deep baritone voice took me back to the days of Rex Allen saying “All you add is love” for Purina Dog Chow. Lance knows his stuff, he was there. He appeared in three of The King's films, working as his stunt double and taking on minor roles. Look close, that's Lance sitting on the side of the stage playing tambourine in the '68 comeback special.
The tacky opulence hit the moment we walked through Graceland's front door. These first rooms are actually the most tastefully decorated in the mansion. The living room looks like what if Liberace played the inside of I Dream of Jeannie's bottle.
Across the entry hall, the dining room decor could best be described as early Southern grandma. But hands down, the highlight of these first few rooms has to be Mama's purple poodle bathroom. We craned our heads around the doorway as far as we could to get a good look.
Headed down the hall, past the conventional kitchen, into the heart of The King's lair, the feel of the house shifted from southern comfort to Hillbilly Cat.
Every living area has a bar -- Elvis liked to entertain. The groovy, mod style TV / target practice (when something displeasing to The King came on one of the sets) room, all yellow and black with mirrored ceilings set the tempo. E had heard that Lyndon Johnson had three sets to watch the news on all three networks at once so... three sets, no waiting on the firing line.
The game room was magnificent, with colorful, patterned, pleated Indian inspired fabric covered the walls, pillows AND the ceiling. Tiffany style overhead lights hover over the billiard table. Knick-knacks that couldn’t possibly be conducive to a game of pool adorn the room.
Then.... The Jungle Room. The King goes green shag carpet native -- on the floors and, oh yeah, the ceiling. Tiki tacky barely begins to describe this conglomeration. Rock-A Hula! Blue Hawaii must have really rubbed off on E. A colorfully lit fountain cascades down an entire stone wall and the furniture is unbelievably, well, let's just call it Paradise, Hawaiian Style.
Leaving the inside of the house, we see Vernon Presley's office. Vernon was Elvis' daddy and ran the business affairs from an office right on the grounds of Graceland. The sign on the door pretty much sums up his business attitude: “NO LOAFING IN OFFICE STRICTLY FOR EMPLOYEES ONLY! IF YOU HAVE BUSINESS HERE. PLEASE TAKE CARE OF IT AND LEAVE. - VERNON PRESLEY”
From the office we proceeded through a long hallway filled with memorabilia. Gold records, movie posters, photos, clothes and awards. I found it interesting that none of the three Grammy awards given to The King of Rock & Roll were for Rock & Roll. He won them all in the Gospel Music category. It also struck me that all of the suits, even the later Viva Las Vegas models, seemed to be tailored for the earlier, skinny Elvis.
We finished up in the Meditation Garden, which Elvis built for quiet reflection back in the sixties, but due to security issues at the Forest Hill Cemetery, now serves as the Presley family private cemetery. Here we see the final resting places of daddy Vernon, mother Gladys, grandmother Minnie May, a memorial to twin brother Jessie Garon and, of course, Elvis.
With the tour of Graceland complete, we headed back across Elvis Presley Boulevard into the sea of swag offered to the pilgrims. In amongst the shops disguised as attractions is the car museum. Definitely worth a look.
For all the jokes about his taste in decorating choices of Graceland, Elvis certainly had good taste in cars. As Rock & Roll royalty, The King had to have a couple of Rolls Royce Silver Clouds, but also a 1975 Ferrari Dino, a '62 Lincoln Continental, a Mercedes limo and a convertible 280 SL (for Priscilla) from back before most Americans knew what a Mercedes was.
There are also two Stutz Blackhawks in the collection. One, a 1971 model, is the first Stutz ever brought into the United States. The other, a '73, the last car that Elvis ever drove. Of course Cadillac was his favorite and there are a couple of great ones here.
The '55 pink Fleetwood makes your basic Mary Kay model look like nothing but a hound dog, but I must say, the 1956 purple El Dorado convertible is as good as it gets. It massively screams cool and you could make at least three Toyotas from the steel in this Detroit classic.
After browsing through several more of the “attractions” and passing up treasures like the $275 Elvis and Priscilla dolls, the $210 incredibly tacky watch, the $319 purse and flask set and a most tempting $3,300 replica jumpsuit, we decided it was time to see Lisa Marie. Turns out a small jumpsuit was headed that way too.
A faux airport gate entrance leads to the “Elvis Fan Detector” security checkpoint and then up the jetway to board The King's “Flying Graceland” he named, just like his daughter, Lisa Marie. She is a former Delta Airlines Convair 880, which was a state of the art long range jumbo jet for it's day and is the best preserved of the few remaining 880's.
The interior is set up with a lounge area up front, then a corporate style meeting room, both with the mandatory wet bars, and finally Elvis' private quarters aft. The stateroom includes a king sized bed (what else?) with the FAA required seatbelt across it and a private dressing room / bathroom complete with 24 karat gold plated fixtures and sink. The gold plating is sort of a theme running throughout the aircraft, right down to the seatbelt buckles.
It was obvious, as we were leaving the grounds, that the spirit of The King never left the building. He lives on in each new generation, as embodied by the Little Elvis we passed as he headed out for a trip on the Lisa Marie.
Thank you, thank you very much.

The Last Hours of Elvis Presley (by Jeff Schrembs)

Authors comment: It is with great sadness that I have written the "account" of Elvis Presley' last hours. I do so SOLELY out of respect for Elvis Presley, his legacy, his family, and for Elvis Fans Worldwide (so that they have an "accurate accounting" of what actually occured on August 16, 1977). Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy (Note: This "account" is a series of writings, concerning Elvis Presley, by Mr. Jeff Schrembs who is a renowned Elvis Presley Expert & Collector). Thank you - take care - God bless.

The Last Hours of Elvis Presley
(Authored by Jeff Schrembs - all rights reserved)

*Please note that all times are based upon “first hand recollections” taken during the time period of August 16, 1977 through October 27, 197. All times are “CST” which is Central Standard Time for Memphis Tennessee.

Tuesday, August 16, 1977:

12:00 (Midnight): Elvis, along with his girlfriend Ginger Alden, return to Graceland after Elvis requested and received “dental assistance” (note: it has been reported that Elvis was given a “temporary crown”) earlier at (approximately) 10:30 pm via Elvis’ Dentist Dr. Lester Hofman.

2:30 am: Elvis calls his Doctor and asks for specific painkillers. Elvis stated that he had a dental procedure done earlier, as could not sleep and needed his rest for the upcoming tour, and was experiencing tooth pain. The Doctor issues the prescription for the medication requested by Elvis and Elvis sends his step-brother (i.e. Ricky Stanley) to pick up six Dilaudid pills for Elvis from the “all night pharmacy” located at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

4:00 am: Elvis still cannot sleep at which point he awakens his “first cousin” Billy Smith, along with Billy Smith’s wife Jo, and “invites” them to play racquetball with him. Elvis, being heavily medicated, tired, and anxious about leaving later on in the day for his first tour since the “press onslaught” concerning the book “Elvis What Happened” plays the racquetball game while barely moving.

4:30 am: Elvis, after completing the game of racquetball, stops at the piano (located directly outside the racquetball court), and plays two gospel songs (note: there is disputes about what songs were played but it has been stated that the “belief” is that Elvis played; Precious Lord, How Great Thou Art, and/or Old Rugged Cross) along with one “non-gospel song” entitled "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain."

5:00 am: Elvis, along with his girlfriend Ginger Alden, say goodnight and go directly up to Elvis' bedroom. Elvis then takes a “package of pills” (note: Elvis routinely had his medications put into “packages” so that he did not have to rummage through medication bottles and possibly take the wrong medications). This specific “package of pills” was put together by his personal Physician and was to be taken “twice each day”.

7:00 am: Elvis takes a second “package of pills” (note: Elvis had separate “package of pills” for “pain” and, as example, one for “sleep’ and one for “wake up”, etc.).

8:00 am: Elvis is still unable to sleep at which point he calls his Aunt, Delta Mae Biggs who also resides at Graceland, to “bring him a third package of pills”. She arrives, with the third package of pills, a few moments later (note: Delta Mae Biggs, along with a few “trusted” family members/Memphis mafia members, were entrusted with keeping “readily available “packets of medications” for Elvis at all times”.

9:30 am: Elvis, in his bedroom with Ginger Alden, informs Ginger that he still cannot sleep and tells her that he is going into his bathroom to read (note: there are disputes concerning which book Elvis takes with him and the dispute is between the books; “The Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus” and/or “The Prophet”. It is our belief that the most reliable source is that Elvis took “The Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus” and he left “The Prophet” on his bedside table”. While Elvis is heading towards his bathroom, book in hand, Ginger replies to Elvis “Don't fall asleep in there”. Elvis’ response is "Okay, I won't,” Sadly, these are the last words that Elvis ever said that was heard by anyone.

1:30 pm: Ginger awakes from her sleep and is surprised to find that Elvis is not asleep beside her (note: it was an “unwritten rule” that whoever went to bed with Elvis was entrusted with checking on him regularly. This was done because in addition to Elvis being a sleep walker he was also on medications that could “kick in”, all of a sudden, rendering Elvis unable to complete whatever it was that he was doing at the time such as eating, reading, etc. For Elvis to have been “unchecked” from approximately 9:30am until 1:30pm was HIGHLY UNUSUAL). She immediately goes to the bathroom door and knocks while saying “Elvis are you ok”. After getting no response she opens the bathroom door and discovers Elvis lying on the bathroom floor. Ginger immediately, and frantically, calls out (including using the intercom system and the telephone) for Elvis’ Associates (i.e. Al Strada and Joe Esposito). Al Strada, and Joe Esposito, arrive and try to move Elvis and check his vitals and they immediately call for an ambulance conveying that it is an “EMERGENCY involving Elvis Presley”.

2:04pm: The ambulance arrives at Graceland at which point the medics try to revive Elvis and check his vitals. Elvis is put onto a stretcher and placed into the ambulance and it is relayed to Baptist Memorial Hospital that Elvis is “unresponsive” and en route.

2:56 pm: Elvis Presley arrives via ambulance at Baptist Memorial Hospital and is taken into the Emergency Room where Doctors, and medical care providers, frantically try to revive Elvis. All attempts to revive Elvis are unsuccessful.

3:30 pm: The Physicians at Baptist Memorial Hospital officially pronounce that “Elvis Presley” is dead. The “official cause of death” is "cardiac arrhythmia” (note: the Coroners Autopsy notes reflect that Elvis may have suffered from heart disease and, in fact, Elvis heart was reported to have been “one and a half times the size of a normal mans heart with the same height/weight/age”. Elvis Presley’ Autopsy was completed at 7:00pm CST officially) which means “stopped heart”.

4:00 pm: Surrounded by a “sea of reporters” Vernon Presley informs the press that “My son is dead."

Last Days of Elvis Presley by Jeff Schrembs

*** Disclaimer: This is part of a series of articles by Jeff Schrembs, World Reknowned Elvis Presley Expert and Elvis Presley Collector. It is a "summary" with additional details being included into the "final product" scheduled for official release in late 2009. Please enjoy. ***

August of 1977 was a very hectic, and trying, month for Elvis.
His health had deteriorated. He was involved with Ginger Alden and there was "mixed feelings". Elvis What Happened was being covered by the news 24/7. Lisa Marie was visiting. Monetary concerns were apparent which worried Vernon greatly. There was an investigation concerning the purchase of an airplane (FBI case files confirm).
Also, Elvis had lived his life saying from the time he was a young child - and then confirming such after her passing - that "he would never outlive the age of his Mother when she passed".
Gladys had passed away in mid August during Elvis' time in the Army. Elvis always believed that at the time she passed away that she was "42 years old". However, Gladys was really 46 years old and Elvis never knew that she was - in fact - 4 years older.

In August of 1977 Elvis was the same age, going into the same month of her passing (8/14/1958), that Gladys was when she passed. August 14, 1977 was the "anniversary" of her passing and it weighed HEAVILY on Elvis.

Elvis had a STRONG spiritual soul and he devoured books about Religion and he believed in "signs". Elvis has seen, and commented to several close friends, that things were "different" and that these "signs" were adversely affecting him. Elvis was ALWAYS the one that "solved problems", for others, but now even those closest to Elvis "knew" that something was "wrong" but they never expected it to turn out the way that it did. It was not "unthought of", and even discussed in their "heart of hearts", but we were talking about Elvis Presley...who was "bigger than life" (so the thought process went).

During his own birth the story goes what as Jessie Garron was being delivered that a medicine bottle had (mysteriously) "broken" putting a "chill" in the air. Jesse Garron was dead...still born.
A few minutes later the attending Doctor washed up and was going to leave when Gladys told him that "there was another baby" and sure enough...there was.

Elvis always had a "reaction" when this story was retold however it was limited to relatives so Elvis' reaction was "contained". Yet, in 1977 Elvis' "inner self" became more and more "sensitive" to the signs and the combination of "real life events"...and they stayed with Elvis...day and night.

There were MANY "signs" (visual, mental, physcial, spiritual, monetary, legally, and internally) that affected Elvis during 1977 and it seemed like things were "falling apart". He complained about his arms/limbs being "numb" and a "feeling in his body" like something was...wrong. His eating/sleep patterns were getting worse and he was depending more and more on Charlie Hodge during the last Concert Tour for help on songs...and the pace.

{Note: In 1977 I had a terrible nightmare of being choked. I felt like
something was stuck in my throat, something of mass, and it could not come out.
Just as I thought my breath would be my last someone stuck their hand into my
mouth and (literally) took the object out. It was food...some type of food. I
never ever understood this nightmare. It bothered me so much that I took a
pencil, and a notepad, and kept it in a journal. I have that journal to this
day. It is one of the FEW documents I have from my youth. In my nightmare the
hand turned into an Angel and the Angel's face and body blurred and only
the hands were left. Then the hands turned into (of all people) Joe
Esposito. During my sleep I had "sweated" through my clothes. This had never
happened before.

Fast forward twenty years and I came across an interview of Joe Esposito
whereby he, painstakenly and it was VERY evident that speaking of this bothered
Joe....greatly, described an incident where he had to remove food from Elvis as
Elvis' medication had kicked in and he had (literally) fallen asleep while
chewing/eating. Thankfully Joe reacted fast...and reacted correctly. I don't
think that this occurence, even though it is a "sad" topic, is anything other
than (a) a fact and (b) honorable as it showed Joe's love for Elvis as well as
the fact that (sadly) Elvis had to take STRONG medications to sleep and that
those medications (when they "kicked in") had consequences beyond (on some
aspects) Elvis' control.

During my life I have had many dreams, nightmares, and even "visions" in
the day. Many of these I have "solved" throughout the years. However, some very
VIVID ones remain "unsolved" and yet I can recall them...like it happened
yesterday. It is a very interesting, yet frustrating, series of (as of now)
unexplained events that I hope to - one day - forward to several individuals and obtain their 'input"}

His quest for "lifes answers" were a constant tourment and his appetite for answers...NOW was only "surpassed" by his acceptance that his health was....not good. For Elvis to, in public and in front of those who depended on him, allow himself to look "less than the best" and/or to publiclly complain (note: for many years Elvis locked himself away from others in his room for days at a time. It was so common that Vernon left plates of food outside Elvis door, along with a certain "knock on the door" which let Elvis know the food/water was there, only to be eaten - left outside the door signaling the cycle to repeat itself until Elvis (eventually) re-appeared...no questions asked) even the day of a Concert...was...."rare" but increasing throughout 1977.

Elvis always kept the Physicians Desk Reference with him and he, they said, could tell you the chemical make up of every known pill in use. The side effects and the purposes.
Like most things that Elvis took "serious" he went after it...with a passion until he "knew it" like the back of his own hand.

During the 24 hours preceding his death Elvis requested, and received, SPECIFIC medications from his Doctor and by his Dentist. Anyone reviewing these (2) two medications will tell you that (a) they should not be taken together and (b) combined with what Elvis was already taking...was "concerning" to say the least.

WHY it is, that Elvis opted to complain of these specific illness and asking for these specific medications, was known only to Elvis. Worth noting is the FACT that during one "diagnosis" Elvis was initially told he was going to get medication "A" only to be OVERRULED by Elvis who asked for, and received, medication "B". Like everything else Elvis did...he had...a reason. Why? The answer is between God and Elvis and (perhaps) a few living individuals...who will never tell.

Lisa Marie was to leave on August 16, 1977 to return to Priscilla in California. For whatever reason(s) Elvis, who usually would check on Lisa at or before midnight (as not to disturb her sleep), opted to come into her room around 3am. Elvis saw that Lisa was still "awake" and he told her to "get some sleep" (paraphrasing).

After entering his bedroom, occupied by Elvis girlfriend (which was the "standard operating procedure" after Elvis' divorce from Priscilla), Elvis tried to read a book while in bed (this was common). At some point Elvis grew frustrated with his inability to sleep, and the medications not cooperating, and Elvis opted to go into his bathroom (which Elvis often went into to read so that he would not "cause discomfort" for his wife/dates/etc). Again, Elvis could not sleep at night and had TERRIBLE insomnia, to spend some time reading. Elvis kept many books, in his bathroom, and he used his bathroom as...and escape so that his (again terrible insomnia) was limited...to him.

Elvis had, since a child, sleep walked and even had episodes whereby he LEFT his house only to be awoken by the screeching of a passing automobile. His Parents made a "rule" that Elvis would ALWAYS be watched, during his sleep (and Elvis did, in fact, sleep next to his Mother throughout his childhood continuing into his teenage years), and the person in charge of "watching him" was CAUTIONED to be diligent...and prepare...for anything/everything.

Today it is very hard to people don't understand WHY Elvis did what he did. They say "why didn't he just watch TV"? Well, in 1977 there were (on average) a TOTAL of (5) five TV stations. Most stations went OFF THE AIR around midnight. There was no Internet, TV, Cable, etc. In some ways it was "better then" as it made for ample opportunities to read.

It has been WIDELY discussed WHICH book Elvis was reading (a) while in bed and (b) when he went into the bathroom. I believe that the book that Elvis was reading in bed was different from the one in the bathroom. I believe that the book Elvis took into the Bathroom was "The Scientific Search...the Face of Jesus" and the book Elvis was reading in bed was "The Shroud of Turin". Both of these books had been given to Elvis (recently) by Elvis friend, spiritual assistant, and hair stylist...Larry Geller (wonderful man by the way).

Worth noting, concerning Elvis' books, were the following:
Elvis had been given a copy of a UNIQUE book entitled "The Minstrel" which was written about Elvis. In 1977 there were (approximately) a few hundred of these books and they sold for A THOUSAND DOLLARS each! The book came complete with a Peacock Feather (a symbol that Elvis cherished).
Another book that Elvis cherished, and had with him at the time of his passing, was "The Prophet". This book had been given to him, originally, by his girlfriend June Juanico. Elvis LOVED this book and always had a copy with him.
Of course, the BIBLE was ALWAYS with Elvis and he "devored" passages - was able to recite them openly (and sometimes changed the words/events into "Elvis speak" which consisted of "man, jack, and other Elvis slang speak") - and had a habit of UNDERLINING passages that Elvis marked as they made a "special mark" on Elvis.

Even Elvis GrandMother (Minnie Mae who was divorced from Jesse Pressley and who was living with Elvis at Graceland), who was a CONSTANT "worrier" known to tell anyone/everyone to "watch out for Elvis" and to "take care of him", etc. She recalled that "during August 1977 there was an odd sense about Elvis" and..."she worried" even more than she ever had. There was something...amiss. Something...pressing. Something....unwelcome. It was similar to the "feeling" that one got going into the Attic of Graceland (note: Graceland and the attic SPECIFICALLY was believed to house "ghosts" and had noises, movements, etc. in spite of the fact that on one was "physcially" there at the time. It was also the place where Gladys personal posessions were stored) and Minnie Mae not only discouraged everyone from doing so, including the house staff, but openly suggested that Graceland was inhabited...by "others". It is worth noting that MANY people have "felt" strange things at Graceland yet whenever Elvis was there it was like the house...changed - was improved - and the atmosphere went to peace/love/joy...and normalicy (as much as being at Graceland from the mid 1950's through 1977 could be for when Elvis was there "excitement" was never lacking).

A few weeks earlier Elvis had called Priscilla, has he had been doing for years now (their divorce was finalized on October 9, 1973), and he had kept her on the phone...for hours. One of the things that he reminded her about is the (note: this is VERY UNCOMMON) "promise" that they had made to each other about a possible future...together. Priscilla noted that during this conversation she hung up feeling even more concerned about Elvis as she had prior to the call.

None of us will ever know exactly what went through Elvis' mind when he went into the bathroom to read. We do know that (sadly) Elvis' heart was 1 1/2 times the size and it was "abnormal". Also, there have been rumors (some confirmed by a Doctor) that Elvis had been diagnosed with "bone cancer". However, Elvis had used physical ailments many times in the past (even in the Army) so this could have been a "boy who cried Wolf" syndrome...or not.

What we do know is that God took Elvis away from this Earth on August 16, 1977.

I remember the long drive to Graceland that afternoon and staying for a few days. Each hour brought more and more Fans and food and water were "sparse" but no one focused on the food/water, or lack of, but SOLELY on Elvis.

Seeing Elvis, and the casket, was something that I...

Seeing little Lisa Marie in her dress, and socks up to her knees, holding Priscilla's hand (Priscilla was wearing a garment that had a hood on it and she would pull it over her face outside) was something that I....

We were there because we had lost someone who...shared their time/soul/heart...with.
Not a minute of a day has gone by when I don't think of...and miss Elvis. Not just for what he did onstage...but offstage. For the friends, of quality, that he had and loved him dearly. For the love he shared with his family and the "glow" that was evident when her name/face/etc. was even mentioned...Lisa Marie.

In future posts I will try to share more including the plans that Priscilla and Elvis had for another child...including the name they picked out. During the interim I hope that you enjoy these articles/postings.

Take care and God bless.
